SFMA/FMS

Blackfalds Physiotherapy Clinic now offers our clients access to movement testing through Functional Movement Systems with certified practitioners.

Functional Movement Systems  http://www.functionalmovement.com/site/systemdefined  promotes collaboration between performance and rehabilitation professionals through the use of two tools - the Functional Movement Screen™ and the Selective Functional Movement Assessment™. Both tools evaluate movement but are separated by a clear distinct marker. That marker is pain. If movement produces pain, the individual would be sent through SFMA. If pain is not present, then the FMS is the appropriate tool.

FMS

The Functional Movement Screening (FMS) is a screening test of 7 fundamental movement patterns that help identify individuals at risk for injury or pain associated with non optimal movement patterns.

The FMS generates a Functional Movement Screen Score, which is used to target problems and track progress. This scoring system is directly linked to the most beneficial corrective exercises to restore mechanically sound movement patterns before an injury or pain occurs.

Exercise professionals monitor the FMS score to track progress and to identify those exercises that will be most effective to restore proper movement and build strength in each individual.

FMS focus is on prevention - The FMS quickly identifies dangerous movement patterns so that they can be addressed before an injury occurs.  It also indicates an individual’s readiness to perform exercise so that realistic goals can be set and achieved.

SFMA

The Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA) is a comprehensive movement based diagnostic system used to classify movement patterns and identify individual movement pattern deficiencies.

The SFMA is the movement based diagnostic system, designed to clinically assess 7 fundamental movement patterns in those with known musculoskeletal pain. The assessment provides an efficient method to systematically find the cause of symptoms, not just the source, by logically breaking down dysfunctional patterns and diagnosing their root cause as either a mobility problem or a stability/motor control problem.

The SMFA is our baseline pain and injury evaluation assessment tool.

SMFA focus is on assessment of patterns of movement that are responsible for pain.  The SMFA systematic process allows clinicians to clearly match their intervention to the main problem of the patient.
